Microbiology & Immunology

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is one of the five Basic Science departments in the UIC College of Medicine. There are currently seventeen faculty members within the department and we are actively recruiting additional new faculty members. The mission of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is to carry out outstanding research on the biology, transmission and pathogenesis of viruses and bacteria, as well as on the fundamental immune mechanisms that contribute to both health and disease. Our faculty members study diverse biological questions, ranging from issues of autoimmunity and selection of immune repertoire, emerging pathogens, bacterial and viral pathogenesis, molecular microbiology, physiological cell death, signal transduction and gene therapy in human disease.
